Devon DIY Wedding | Relaxed, Natural Wedding Photography

07/03/2018
Private residence, Devon.
What I love about photographing weddings is that they are such a happy environment to be in. Families and friends unite for one day and celebrate the new bride and groom. I do have to say it beats working in any office hands down!

A Relaxed DIY Wedding in Devon – A Photographer’s Perspective

I first met Claire & Lewis when they booked me for a family shoot with their son. During the conversation, they casually mentioned they were getting married — but quickly followed it up by saying it was down in Devon, assuming it might be too far for me to travel.

It wasn’t. Not even close.

When they described their plans for a laid-back, boho, DIY wedding, travelling was an easy yes. Devon is a brilliant county for weddings like this, especially when there’s a personal connection to the place.

Lewis grew up in the Devon countryside, so choosing to get married there felt completely natural. The landscape, the slower pace and the sense of space all fed into the feel of the day. Nothing felt forced or overly structured. It was simply about bringing everyone together in a place that meant something to them.

DIY weddings like this lend themselves perfectly to documentary photography. Rather than following a rigid schedule, the day unfolds organically — conversations happen where they happen, moments appear without warning, and my role is to quietly capture those interactions as they naturally occur.

Claire & Lewis’s wedding was full of that kind of energy: relaxed, personal and honest. Exactly the sort of day I love photographing.

Thank you Claire & Lewis for trusting me to photograph their wedding. BIG thanks goes out to their family and friends for making me feel so welcome. 🥂
